FUTURE Mack trucks will retain their individual character, rather than lifting complete drivelines from stablemate Volvo, said Mack Trucks President and CEO Deny Slagle.
Slagle said while future Macks might contain a badge-engineered Volvo engine and transmission to provide both big power outputs as well as improved emission controls, Mack will stick with its MP8 engine range.
While the company acknowledged the benefits of using Volvo’s data base on engine design, Slagle says the MP8 will continue to be built to Mack specifications.
The trucks, however, will incorporate some Volvo-sourced technologies like (Selective Catalytic Reduction) SCR, which is set debut in 2010.
SCR technology is a new system for combating emissions, based on the aftertreatment of exhaust gases. It is a simple system with few components — a tank for the additive (AdBlue), a pump, an injection unit and an SCR catalyst.
Finely distributed AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases before they pass through the SCR catalyst. There, the nitrous oxides are transformed into harmless nitrogen and steam — substances that occur naturally in the environment.
