Volvo takes part in 2010 alternative fuels testing

VOLVO has announced it will take part in testing a new generation of bio-fuel in its trucks, called Bio-DME.

Although the di-methyl-ether fuel has been the subject of Volvo’s own testing since 2009, the company will be testing it under a new program starting in 2010 with the European Union, Swedish Energy Agency, representatives of the transport industry and fuel companies.

Bio-DME is produced from black liquor, an energy-rich, highly viscous by-product of the pulp industry, which is converted through a gasification process into a clean and energy efficient fuel.

Volvo said the fuel provides both high energy efficiency and low emissions of greenhouse gases, and these are very important considerations as the trucking industry looks at alternative, green fuels.

Volvo said the fuel generates 95 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to diesel.
