Volvo launches latest version of truck ESP for added versatility

VOLVO has announced the launch of the latest version of its rigid and semi trailer-compliant electronic stability program (ESP) system, able to handle a wider range of vehicles.

According to Volvo, the new version ESP is able to handle both 4x2 and 6x2 rigids and prime movers, as well as multiple trailer applications.

Volvo said the ESP system is controlled by a computer that receives information from a variety of sources, including the ABS brakes’ wheel sensors, the steering system and a gyroscope, allowing the on-board computer to instantaneously determine if the truck is about to roll over or skid.

In a skid situation, the main response is individual wheel braking, with the system braking the wheel or wheels that offer the best potential for bringing the vehicle safely back on course.

If the skid occurs on a slippery road surface or there is a high risk of roll over, the ESP reacts by lowering engine revs to reduce vehicle speed and braking individual wheels.
