Volvo Australia updates The Road Ahead Exhibition’s prime mover

VOLVO Trucks Australia has announced it has updated the prime mover powering The Australian Trucking Association (ATA)’s The Road Ahead exhibition on its tours throughout Australia.

The new silver Volvo replaces the famous 'safety yellow' truck.

The new Volvo features Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which monitors the time gap to the vehicle in front and uses its engine, gearbox and brakes to maintain a set gap.

ACC also incorporates a forward collision warning system.

Another safety features included in the new prime mover includes driver alert support, which uses video cameras and computers to monitor vehicle position on road and driving behaviour.

The new prime mover also includes lane keeping support, which monitors the truck's position and reduces the risk of accidentally driving off the road, and lane changing support, which keeps an eye on the blind spot on the left hand side of the cab and is activated by the turn indicator.

According to Volvo Trucks Australia, the new mover also features Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. SCR uses an additive called AdBlue, which is injected into the diesel engine’s exhaust gases before they pass through a catalytic converter.

In the catalytic converter, the nitrogen oxides, which contribute to smog in the atmosphere, are turned into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. SCR can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 70 to 95 per cent.

AdBlue is carried onboard in specially designed tanks and is dosed into the system at a rate equivalent to three to five per cent of diesel consumption.
