State laws to regulate heavy vehicles

The Federal Government intends to set up a national heavy vehicle regulator under state rather than federal law.

According to the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), the Federal Government intends the national heavy vehicle regulator will be hosted in a particular jurisdiction, which will establish the legal framework for other jurisdictions.

ATA says the Federal Government believes the body will set up national standards across the regulatory provisions for heavy vehicles.

ATA claims the transport ministers will be meeting at committee earlier this month to discuss the template for the legislations.
