NT Government to contribute $1m to new truck rest areas

THE TRUCKING industry has welcomed the Australian Government’s decision to fund three new truck rest areas in the Northern Territory.

The Australian Government is contributing $1 million to the project, which will be supplemented by $160,000 from the Territory Government.

The funds have been made available through the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, which it established last year.

Following consultations with the Australian Trucking Association NT, rest stops will be created on the Stuart Highway between Katherine and Pine Creek, with the other two on the Barkly Highway between Three Ways and the Tablelands Highway and between Soudan Station and Avon Downs.

Trevor Martyn, Chairman of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), said the industry welcomes the announcement by Minister Albanese to improve and create new truck rest areas for its hard working drivers.

He said the work will contribute to providing more and safer places for drivers to take their mandatory rest breaks or overnight sleep, and by having adequate facilities such as these, drivers can comply with the law and manage their fatigue at the same time.
