New B-Doubles on Melbourne roads to serve growing freight task

GIANT B-double trucks will be introduced to accommodate a big increase in cargo arriving at the Port of Melbourne.

The trucks, which can fit two 40-foot containers and can carry 30 per cent more freight than normal trucks, are part of a two-year state government trial.

Roads minister Tim Pallas said Victoria’s freight task was expected to double over the next 20 years, making the trial all the more important.

Each vehicle is fitted with a GPS tracker for monitoring purposes. They will not have any additional speed or lane restrictions. The 77-tonne trucks, will be limited to their designated routes.

None of the designated routes include residential areas.
