Extra $200m funding given to local councils for roads

THE FEDERAL Government has announced it will provide an extra $200 million to local councils across the country to spend on improving their roads.

In announcing the extra funding, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said it is important to ensure roads maintained by councils are maintained to ensure national productivity does not fall.

He said the government understands the importance of the funding particularly for rural and regional councils, where the funds can often compromise over half of the council’s revenue.

The grants were recommended to the Government by the various state’s Local Government Grants Commission and will be followed by other grants.
