The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has urged the review of the National Transport Commission to give more say to industry operators and to not expand the body’s powers.
The submission comes as the Australian Government reviews NTC’s functions in order to determine what future direction it will take.
The ATA made seven recommendations to the review panel.
Among the recommendations, the ATA called for clear definitions of the NTC's road and rail functions, a more specific charter to make road transport safer and more productive and specialised staff to handle each function separately.
The ATA also recommends the NTC should not be allowed to broaden its responsibilities beyond safety and productivity.
The recommendations point out that national policy issues such as climate change, fuel supplies, and passenger transport are all important, but they are already dealt with by other government bodies with clear responsibility for those areas.
The recommendations also called for the enhanced representation of industry and the inclusion of the ATA Chair on any future review committee.
