ATA pushes for agreement on climate change scheme

THE Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has continued to urge politicians to reach an agreement on the Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

ATA chairman Trevor Martyn says supports the scheme because it will enable Australia to reach its emissions targets with the lowest level of cost, disruption and government intervention.

“Under the scheme, the fuel companies would buy carbon permits and pass the cost on through the price of fuel. There would be no extra paperwork or compliance costs for small trucking operators. Companies would be able to make their own decisions about how to deal with the price increase, based on their specific circumstances,” he says.

“The scheme would eventually cost the trucking industry and its customers billions of dollars a year, but it would be much better than the alternative.”
