ATA applauds funding for additional Qld rest stops

THE TRUCKING industry has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to fund seven new truck rest areas across Queensland.

The Australian Government has announced it will contribute $6.4 million to the project which will supplement $11 million already announced by the Queensland Government.

The funds will be made available from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, which it established last year.

According to the Chairman of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Trevor Martyn, the work will contribute to providing more and safer places for drivers to take their mandatory rest breaks or overnight sleep.

He said by having adequate facilities such as these, drivers can comply with the law and manage their fatigue at the same time.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Queensland Trucking Association, Peter Garske, also welcomed the funding from the Australian Government.

The Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program was established by the Australian Government last year after listening to the concerns raised by the trucking industry.
